Ask someone in Denver what happens in Leadville in August and they'll say "Boom Days" or "the hundred." Ask someone who lives on 6th Street and you'll get a different answer: the town has two peaks and a trough, and the trough is the reason you live here.

August 7 through 9 is the annual Leadville Boom Days, a three-day festival that lands, as it always does, on the first full weekend in August. One week later, on Saturday, August 15, the Life Time Leadville Trail 100 MTB starts at 10,152 feet and climbs to 12,424 feet. Between those two Saturdays sits a five-day window when Harrison Avenue is yours again. The trick to living well up here in August is knowing which days to spend in the crowd and which days to disappear into it.

Boom Days: Pick A Day, Not A Weekend

Boom Days is the town's largest weekend of the year. It's also the weekend that most tests a resident's patience with visitors. The three-day celebration features burro races, mining skill contests and theatrical gunfighter shows across downtown, with over a hundred food and craft booths crammed onto Harrison.

If you're going to commit to one day, make it Sunday. The Leadville Boom Pack Burro Race on Sunday, August 9, is one of Colorado's most unique endurance traditions, blending mountain running, Western heritage, and teamwork between humans and burros. The Western Pack Burro Ass-ociation has been running some version of this race for decades, and 2026 brings two structural changes worth knowing before you plant a chair.

First, the short course has been cut. For years the "short" course was anything but short, a rugged 15-mile challenge with significant elevation gain. The 2026 short course is 6.5 miles, still with stunning views, the historic mining district and enough rugged terrain to keep things interesting. Second, the finish route is different. Rather than descending South Toledo Street to Highway 24, teams now return along the same route used at the start, heading back toward 5th Street and entering Harrison Avenue from 7th Street before finishing downtown.

If you want the best free seats, be near 4th and Harrison Avenue by 8:00am for registration and equipment check in front of Community Banks of Colorado. The long course starts at 10:00am and the short course at 10:15am. The long course still climbs the classic historic route toward Mosquito Pass.

One rule the organizers make impossible to miss: no dogs, on or off-leash, in the downtown festival area. Every year someone forgets. Don't be that neighbor.

The Middle Week Is The Point

Monday through Friday between Boom Days and the LT100 is the best five-day stretch Leadville gets all year. The weekend crowd has cleared out. The racer crowd hasn't checked in yet. Reservations open up. Trails empty out. This is when locals eat out.

A few standing dates fall inside that window:

• Thursdays at High Mountain Pies. The Backyard Concert Series runs Thursday nights at 5pm at 115 W. 4th Street with free admission, pizza specials, and a cash bar on the patio. Bring a camp chair. Locals bring their kids.
• Thursday bingo at the Elks. Open to the public, family bingo every Thursday evening at the Elks Lodge, 123 W. 5th Street. If you've never been, this is the week to go.
• Trivia at FREIGHT. The bar at 320 E. 9th Street runs cause-driven trivia nights supporting Lake County Build-A-Generation, the community organization known as LCBAG.
• Wildflower on the rails. The Leadville Railroad, out of 326 E. 7th Street, runs scenic journeys through the Rockies past alpine wildflowers, historic tracks, and towering peaks. Mid-August is peak color at elevation, and midweek trains are half empty.

The Healy House lawn is a quieter draw for anyone with out-of-town parents in tow. It sits at 912 Harrison Ave and hosts free-admission events with lawn games and refreshments. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum and the Tabor Opera House are both open through August and both are worth an actual afternoon, not a drive-by, if you've been putting them off since you moved here.

LT100 Saturday: Watch, Don't Fight

The Life Time Leadville Trail 100 MTB fills every rental bed in Lake County. If you're a resident, the mistake is treating it like a spectator event you can drop in on. It's a logistics event that happens to have racers.

The LT100 MTB is one of the most prestigious endurance cross-country mountain bike events in the world, and every year a handful of gritty cyclists make the pilgrimage to Cloud City to Race Across the Sky. That pilgrimage means Harrison closes, downtown parking evaporates before dawn, and the finish line is a wall of people by early afternoon.

The move most residents settle into after a few years: skip the 6:30am start line and skip the finish. Head instead to the Boulevard, where riders come through around mile 25 and again on the return, or bike out to the Turquoise Lake spur where you can actually see faces. If you want to be part of the finish party, walk in from the east side of downtown after 3pm rather than driving.

Sunday, August 16 is the recovery day for the town, not just the racers. Trails on the west side, the fish hatchery loops, and the paths connecting to the Colorado Trail all shed their weekend traffic by mid-morning. This is your day.

Where To Eat When Harrison Is A Parking Lot

The dining picture in Leadville has moved in the last two years, and the movement matters if you've been defaulting to the same three spots.

Treeline Kitchen added CMC Campus Coffee Shop in 2025 and Mtn View Coffee Shop in 2026, with community, sustainability, and health as stated values. That's a small local group quietly becoming a three-location operation, which is unusual at 10,200 feet.

The old Grill space reopened as The Leadville Grill and Cantina under new ownership. The owners describe reviving a local gem rich with history since 1938 under their care. If you haven't been in since the reopening, the bar itself is worth a look on its own.

For a sit-down that still feels like a night out, Mineral 1886 remains the go-to. Located at the historic Delaware Hotel in Leadville, Mineral 1886 Restaurant and bar offers an elegant dining experience. High Mountain Pies handles the pizza-and-patio side of the week. Cafe Sanchez II on the main drag continues to have a following among people who track green chile the way others track snowpack.
